Sexual dysfunction is emerging as one of the most common problems among both men and women indulging in sexual intercourse. It can be caused by different reasons like physical problems and medical conditions. It includes heart disease and hormone imbalances, or can also occur by psychological problems, like anxiety, depression, and the effects related to any past trauma.
Types of Sexual Dysfunction
There are four main types of sexual dysfunction :
The desire disorders as the name suggest affecting the sexual desire and interest of an individual in sex. These orders are also known as libido disorders or low libido. Low estrogen and testosterone levels in the body can cause a decrease in the libido, as can lead to hormonal changes, medical conditions like diabetes and heart disease, relationship problems, sexual inhibitions, and many other problems.
As the name suggests, arousal disorders make it difficult or impossible for a male or female to become physically aroused during sexual activity. The most common type of arousal disorder in men is erectile dysfunction. When any person has arousal disorder, he or she may be interested in sexual activity, but be unable to derive any kind of physical satisfaction from it.
In simple words, this relates to an absence of orgasm or delayed orgasm. Orgasm disorders are a common problem in women. However, the issues can also occur in men. Some of the issues are pain during sexual activity, stress, fatigue, and others like hormonal changes and reduced libido that can all lead to delayed or absent orgasm.
Pain Disorders involve pain during intercourse. These types of disorders can affect both men and women. In women, pain may be caused by vaginal dryness, other problems like vaginismus (a condition that affects the vaginal muscles), urinary tract infections (UTIs), followed by other hormonal changes during menopause, and other conditions. In men, pain is a result of Peyronie’s disease (physical damage to the penis), infections like UTIs, prostatitis and yeast infections, genital herpes, and many other skin conditions.
If you have a problem that relates to any type of sexual dysfunction, talk to your doctor. Some treatments can help cure the problem.
